Case Study: Maxwell Street Days Flea Market
RECYCLING AT BIG VENDOR EVENTS:
Maxwell Street Days Flea Market: Mukwonago, Wisconsin
Held one weekend a month from June through September, the Mukwonago Maxwell Street Days Flea Market at Field Park has had a successful run for 49 years. Thousands of people flood Mukwonago to attend the event, featuring over 600 vendors who reserve spaces to sell wares ranging from rummage, antiques, and artwork to plants, clothing, and more. Food and refreshments are available on the grounds, which are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
To reduce trash and improve existing cardboard recycling, event planners--with encouragement and assistance from the hauler and Waukesha County recycling staff-- incorporated bottle & can recycling along with the current cardboard collection. Since the eventís hauler, Johnís Disposal, offers single-stream recycling, the goal is to collect recyclables in fewer dumpsters, saving costs on extra containers. Resourceful Bag and Tagís ClearStream ģ recycling bins were borrowed from the county to collect bottles & cans from patrons. Vendors are provided with a hand-out during check-in, and roll-offs are strategically placed and labeled.
